In 2015, under the leadership of the ICSB President Ki-Chan Kim, ICSB pledged to bridge the dialogue between Asian scholars and 10-10 USASBE 2016 3their Western counterparts.

At the USASBE 2016 Conference, themed “Entrepreneurship Everywhere,” ICSB brought together a group of Korean and American scholars for the pilot “ICSB Korea-USASBE Research Matching Program” (click here for the program brochure). The main goal of the program is to promote knowledge exchange and cross-cultural dialogue.

The program is envisioned to bring ten researchers from South Korea and ten researchers from the United States and match them based on research interests. The program, with the support of ICSB Korea and USASBE, hopes to merge relevant topical areas, research methodologies, and datasets in an effort to create new relevant knowledge. A common area of the research in this group was Korean management best practices, specifically as it relates to high tech firms and the implications for U.S.-based entrepreneurs.

10-10 USASBE 2016 2The participants started with a Meet and Greet on Saturday, January 9, 2016, opened by Drs. Jeff Hornsby, Interim Director of the Regnier Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at University of Missouri-Kansas City and Alex DeNoble, USASBE President (2015), Professor of Management, and Executive Director of San Diego State University’s Lavin Center for Entrepreneurship, followed by introductions from Dr. Ayman El Tarabishy, ICSB Executive Director, and Dr. KwangTae Park, President of The Korean Association of Small Business Studies (KASBS).

This session included a special guest presentation on research agendas. Among the various research topics interests presented, the participants were brought together to find commonalities in research expertise and interest among the topics of (but not limited to):

  • Technology innovation capability on technology commercialization,
  • Resource acquisition, capability, and performance of new ventures,
  • Entrepreneurship pedagogy in higher and adults education,
  • Company vs. consumer-driven SNS activity on firm value, and
  • K-entrepreneurship.

On Monday, January 11, ICSB hosted a facilitated working session to further discuss research opportunities and allow for one-on-one meeting time. To browse the submitted abstracts for more information, please click here.

ICSB plans to continue this program at the ICSB 2016 World Conference, and hopefully also include new regions and countries in the matching initiative.
