[Prepared by: Won Seok Han]
Presentation Date: April 14, 2017
Speaker: Dr. Ayman El Tarabishy
Summary Notes:
On Friday, April 14, 2017, Korean Management Institute presented a knowledge forum on a topic, titled “What is Entrepreneurship?” The speaker was Dr. Ayman El Tarabishy, an associate professor at GWSB management department as well as an Executive Director at Korean Management Institute and International Council for Small Business.
Just flying from South Korea the night before, Dr. Tarabishy tirelessly opened his presentation by sharing an amusing experience he had over the trip. He was surprised to learn that there is a night market called “Yashijang” in Dongdaemun, which starts 10 PM and continues until the sunrise. The story is a good representation of how dynamic and passionate Korean culture and people are, and Dr. Tarabishy said this is exactly why he is interested in studying Korean management style.
After the presentation on the difference between innovation and creativity, Gyujin Shin, a graduate GWSB student studying Information Systems Technology, asked whether the speaker considers Korean global conglomerates like Samsung and Hyundai as innovative. As a response, the professor shared a valuable conversation with one of Samsung’s CEOs, which contained Samsung’s goal and strategy in this rapidly changing world.
Dr. Tarabishy urged the audience to be ready for the incoming wave of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which will fuse different technologies and blur the lines between different parameters. He also mentioned how disruptive technology can shatter the existing market and create a whole new one – advancing technology of built-in camera phones brought the demise of the digital camera market. The presentation ended with a brief description of KMI’s upcoming events.
We thank Professor Tarabishy for taking his time to share his knowledge with the GW students and faculty members. Thank you all the attendees, we look forward to seeing you at future events!
